Frequently asked questions.
What is a septic system?
A septic system is an underground disposal system for wastewater and sewage. Septic Systems typically feature two primary components: the septic tank and the drainage field.
A septic system has a main sewer line that connects all the outflowing plumbing to the septic tank, and a distribution box that connects the septic tank to the drainage field. The tank is usually buried approximately 10 to 15 feet from a dwelling.
The main purpose of a septic system is to treat and dispose of waste water generated by residents of the property. A septic tank can be as efficient as a public sewer system if properly installed and maintained.
How does a septic system work?
Waste water and sewage flows into the septic tank and the primary stages of water treatment begin. Anaerobic bacteria thrives in the septic tank. Sludge is created as the anaerobic bacteria breaks down the solids.
Lighter materials, such as grease and soap, will float to the top and create a layer of scum. This allows nearly all of the waste water to flow out of the septic tank. At this point, the waste water will be void of any soap, solids or grease.
The waste water, which is relatively clear at this point, will exit the septic tank outlet and flow into the distribution box, which is designed to evenly distribute all waste water flow that passes through the drainage field.
Once waste water reaches the drainage field, it passes through perforated horizontal pipes, followed by a layer of crushed stone, and then finally through several feet of unsaturated soil. The waste water, which has been fully treated, travels through the soil, completely killing off the bacteria and leaving clear, purified water.
How often should my septic tank be pumped?
We recommend a full septic tank pumping about every 1-2 years, depending on the condition of the tank and how many people are using it.
How often should my grease trap be cleaned?
A good rule of thumb is that a grease trap will need to be cleaned between every one to three months. It all depends on how quickly your trap reaches that 1/4th capacity with fats, oils, greases and solids. This will depend on both the capacity of your grease trap and the amount of grease your restaurant produces. If you find your restaurant is filling up your grease trap faster than a month, it’s time to look at resizing your grease trap to meet needs.
Can I use a liquid drain cleaner to clear a clogged drain?
Products such as Liquid Plumr® and Drano® are strong enough to break up clogs in your pipes such as hair, food or grease, and they do work in some instances, however, you should use caution when pouring them down the drain. Liquid Plumr® and Drano® are chemically designed to eat away at whatever is clogging your pipes, which can result in damaging plastic or even metal pipes. Frequent use of these products is never recommended. Always call a professional for your drain cleaning needs.
